Learning community engagement:Technical literacy

 Learning community engagement:

Technical literacy

Technological literacy plays a crucial role in today's world. Most of the things that we do daily are technology based. For instance, electronic payments, iPads, watches, computers, and more extensive and more sophisticated items such as rockets. Therefore the is a need to learn responsibly how all these tools can benefit us and how reliable they are.

"In short, technology is everything that humans do or make to change the natural environment to suit their own purposes. Or, in the words of Standards for Technological Literacy: Content for the Study of Technology, technology is “the innovation, change, or modification of the natural environment to satisfy perceived human wants and needs” (ITEA, 2000, p. 242)"

How to build and refine technological literacy

I will...

  • ensure the use of credible sources to build stronger knowledge
  • create courses to help the community, such as the "Wikipedia Project", with a purpose in mind to help break the education gap.
  • build content to increase equity.
  • take into consideration that not everybody benefits from technology, especially those with no internet access.
  • continue growing my understanding of technology by taking professional developments and by working in a network to update and be connected to the social world with the intention to increase social justice.
  • ensure to practice and master the characteristics of a technologically literate person, such as knowledge, critical thinking and decision making, and capabilities.
  • help create a more meaningful, designed world that is intended to help others. (Garmire & Pearson, 2006).

What stuck the most
  • The use and impact of the internet on educators and learners.
  • The importance of supporting knowledge with reliable sources.
  • I also learned the value of working collaboratively with other professionals to support learning and provide more accurate information.
  • Another seed in my mind is the value of supporting learning projects such as "Wikipedia". It is fundamental to help spread the real knowledge to help eliminate the education gap. If more people get access to reliable information, they will make more informed choices to combat social disadvantages.
Going forward
  • I would like to implement the knowledge from this class in my current and future bilingual-bicultural classrooms. I also want my students to think critically before using the internet
  • I will be more mindful of reviewing the Wikipedia articles by implementing the "Evaluation tool"
  • I will implement more technological tools to create more awareness of technological literacy.
  • I will implement more online tools for teaching to support academic skills, engagement, and motivation.
